The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) are collaborating with UNESCO-TWAS to foster science in developing countries through the TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships.
TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships are available at South African research institutions for a maximum of three years. They are given to scientists from developing nations (other than South Africa) in order for them to pursue PhD studies in the natural sciences.
Duration: 36 months
Benefits
- Candidates selected for TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships will receive Partial Cost of Study (PCS) funding, which will cover tuition and living expenses up to R101 196 per year per student.
- Furthermore, for TWAS-NRF PhD awardees, the NRF will cover the cheapest return economy travel as well as visa and/or study permission costs.
Eligibility
Applicants for the TWAS-NRF Doctoral fellowships 2022 must meet the following criteria:
- must have obtained an MSc degree in a field of natural sciences;
- must have obtained a minimum of 65% at the master’s level in order to apply for doctoral funding;
- not be living, studying, or working in South Africa in 2022;
- must register at a South African public university in 2023, on a full-time basis, and
- maybe based at any of the 26 South African public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs);
- be citizens and permanent residents from developing countries on the African continent and elsewhere;
- must be a maximum of 32 years of age by 31 December of the year of application;
- must have proof of evaluation of all foreign qualifications (obtained from non-South African universities).
