The 2023 African Economic Conference (AEC) in Addis Ababa

The registration for the 2023 African Economic Conference (AEC), jointly organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is ongoing.

Since the dawn of independence, African countries have realized that industrial development is of critical importance for their sustained and inclusive economic growth. The underlying logic was the potential of Industry to enhance productivity, increase the capabilities of the workforce, and generate employment through introducing new technologies and production. It was recognized that industrialization, with strong linkages to domestic economies, would help African countries to achieve high growth rates, diversify their economies and reduce their exposure to external shocks. This would ostensibly contribute substantially to poverty eradication through employment and wealth creation.

The 2023 African Economic Conference is, therefore, focusing on industrialization as an imperative for Africa to achieve the SDGs and aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, demanding that participants think creatively in considering the industrialization experience on the continent, in accordance with the political will variously expressed at national, regionally and global levels, as well as the evidence of where it has been successful, including and particularly on the continent.
