Hello scholars,
It is another new month,
Let’s get started with an inspiring story of a young African researcher and a policymaker
Hi, my name is Lesedi Senamele Matlala, a Lecturer, Researcher, Social Entrepreneur, Education Activist, and Executive Director of Go-Getters Brand.
Welcome Dr. Matlala, please take us through your professional background
I hold a Master’s degree in Public Policy, Monitoring, and Evaluation and recently completed my PhD in the same discipline from the University of Johannesburg (UJ). My academic journey also includes a postgraduate Diploma in labour law from UJ and research methods and skills from Maastricht University. I am in the final stages of completing my PhD at UJ, where my research focuses on enhancing evidence-informed decision-making in public policy.
Professionally, I wear multiple hats. I am a Lecturer in Public Management and Governance at UJ, specializing in Public Policy, Monitoring, and Evaluation. In this role, I have the privilege of educating and mentoring future leaders, encouraging them to critically analyze policy challenges and develop innovative governance strategies. Additionally, I serve as the Executive Director of Go-Getters Brand, a research consultancy dedicated to delivering impactful research services and fostering positive social change. You can learn more about our work at Go-Getters Brand.
What is your research interest?
My research interests revolve around public policy analysis, monitoring and evaluation, socio-economic studies, and educational programs. I am particularly passionate about evidence-informed decision-making and how it can be leveraged to improve policy formulation and implementation. My work often explores the impact of policies on marginalized communities and seeks to develop strategies that promote social equity and sustainable development.
How does your research benefit your community?
My research aims to provide evidence-based insights that inform policymakers and stakeholders. By conducting thorough analyses of policies and programs, I help identify areas of improvement and recommend actionable solutions. This contributes to more effective public services and initiatives that directly benefit the community. For example, my studies on educational programs have led to the implementation of strategies that improve access to quality education in underprivileged areas. Ultimately, my goal is to use research as a tool to drive social change and enhance the well-being of the communities I serve.
Can you enlighten us more about your brand ‘Go-Getters’?
Go-Getters Brand is a research consultancy firm I co-founded with my colleague, Bruce Chidi, with the mission of empowering organizations and businesses through evidence-based strategies and solutions. We specialize in user experience design, monitoring and evaluation, socio-economic research, and promoting ethical business practices. Our team collaborates closely with clients to address their unique challenges, leveraging research and data analytics to inform decision-making and drive positive outcomes. What are your challenges as an early career scholar?
As an early career scholar, one of the primary challenges I face is balancing multiple professional roles and responsibilities. Managing time effectively between teaching, research, and running Go-Getters can be demanding. Additionally, securing funding for research projects can be competitive and challenging. Staying updated with the rapidly evolving landscape of technology and policy requires continuous learning and adaptation. Despite these challenges, I view them as opportunities for growth and remain committed to overcoming them through perseverance and strategic planning.
As an African in the diaspora, what were some culture shocks for you, and how did you overcome them?
While I am based in South Africa and have conducted international collaborations, I have not lived extensively in the diaspora. However, during my studies and work abroad, I experienced cultural differences such as variations in academic expectations, communication styles, and social norms. I overcame these by embracing openness, seeking to understand different perspectives, and finding common ground with colleagues and peers from diverse backgrounds. These experiences enriched my worldview and enhanced my ability to collaborate effectively across cultures.
What is your advice to other international students and young researchers who wish to have their startup someday?
My advice would be:
- Follow Your Passion: Focus on areas that genuinely interest you and where you believe you can make a significant impact.
- Seek Mentorship: Connect with mentors who can provide guidance, support, and insights based on their experiences.
- Embrace Continuous Learning: Stay curious and committed to learning, as this will help you adapt to new challenges and innovations.
- Build a Strong Network: Cultivate relationships with peers, professionals, and stakeholders in your field.
- Be Resilient: Starting a business or pursuing research can be challenging; perseverance is key.
- Focus on Social Impact: Strive to create solutions that address societal needs and contribute positively to your community.
