PhD Position on Omega-3-Fatty Acids in Gut-Brain Health

Wageningen University & Research is looking for a PhD candidate to work on a multidisciplinary project (Omega-3-Fatty Acids in Gut-Brain Health) in collaboration between Wageningen University and Research, Utrecht University, and several industrial partners.

The project focuses on the role of the brain health of dietary long-chain unsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) EPA and DHA derived from sustainable (algae-derived) sources. For this project, they would like to unravel in which form EPA and DHA present in foods are taken up by both the gut and the brain using in vitro and in vivo models. In vitro, a gut-immune model and blood-brain barrier (BBB) model will be used. In vivo, the uptake of sustainable oils will be tested in a small clinical trial, as well as in a mouse model for Parkinson’s disease.

Tasks

The tasks for this position include:

  • identifying oil compounds using chromatography and mass spectrometry,
  • applying in vitro digestion models,
  • epithelial and immune cell culture,
  • a human trial and an animal study.

Salary

  • The gross salary for the first year is € 2443,- per month rising to € 3122,  in the fourth year;
  • Study leave and partially paid parental leave;
  • The option to accrue additional compensation/holiday hours by working more, up to 40 hours per week;

Job Requirements

For this PhD Position on Omega-3-Fatty Acids in Gut-Brain Health, Wageningen University requests applicants with:

  • an MSc degree in Biology, Biomedical Science, Life Science, Neuroscience, or related field;
  • a strong background in (neuro)immunology;
  • hands-on experience with in vitro or in vivo immune models;
  • knowledge in analytical methods, such as chromatography and mass spectrometry;
  • interest in working with experimental animals;
  • fluency in English (C1 level is mandatory).
