As part of its In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme, DAAD collaborates with the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa to provide funding for Master’s and PhD degrees at South African Universities to South African nationals and permanent residents.
The NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship is thus especially interesting to applicants who would like to gain research experience in South Africa and Germany.
Scholarship holders are eligible to apply for one of five interdisciplinary summer schools offered in Germany during their funding period:
- University of Frankfurt – Environmental and Remote Sensing Data Analysis via Geospatial Technologies in Research and Teaching
- Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) – Education and Research orientated Training in Health Sciences
- Heidelberg University – Enhancing Academic Qualifications in Teaching and Research in Global Health
- University of Applied Sciences Cologne (TH Köln) – Climate Change Adaptation: Risk Assessment and Design of Interventions (CC-Adapt)
- University of Leipzig – Innovators, Doers and Entrepreneurs [at] summer school (IDEAS)

NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship holders are eligible for exciting funding and networking opportunities in addition to the scholarship they have received for their full-time Master or PhD degree in South Africa
Eligibility
- A South African citizenship or a permanent South African residency is a requirement for the scholarship.
- Applicants must be 30 (Masters) or 32 (PhD) years of age or younger in the year of application.
- The NRF minimum academic requirement for postgraduate funding is 65%.
Application Process
All applications must be submitted in English or German
- a ticked off checklist and list of criteria, signed by hand (do not insert a scanned signature), indicating the place and date of issue
- the DAAD application form “Application for a research/study scholarship”
- a curriculum vitae in reverse chronological order without any unexplained gaps
- copies of higher education degree certificates
- a copy of a full set of transcript of records including an explanation of the grading system
- confirmation of relevant professional experience or internships and/or proof of relevant political activities or service to their community
- proof of English language skills
- a current written reference from their current employer or from a university lecturer if they are a student at present, on headed paper, including an original.
- a single letter of motivation (even when applying for two master’s courses)
