Microbiology Research Assistant Position in the Netherlands

The Microbiology Unit within the department of Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry (MMB) calls for applications for the position of Microbiology Research Assistant in the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ).

Several microbiology laboratories, culture facilities, and analytical instrumentation labs are located in the Microbiology Unit of the department MMB. A group of research and laboratory assistants (headed by a lab coordinator) administers and maintains the available analytical apparatuses, develops desirable methodologies, trains users, and transfers necessary knowledge when needed. Microbes (photoautotrophs and heterotrophs, aerobes, and anaerobes) are also separated and grown in culture for use in experiments.

However, they strive to ensure that their staff reflects the diversity of society, including age, gender, ethnic and cultural background. They therefore very much appreciate candidates who are able to increase the diversity of NIOZ.

Tasks

As a Microbiology Research Assistant candidate will be the first contact and/or responsible for, among others:

  • Cultivation of microbes and managing of the culture collections
  • Maintaining and developing further methodologies for specialized equipment, such as different microscopes (standard light- and epifluorescence microscopy but also optical micro-tweezers and live-cell fluorescence microscopy) and (sorter) flow cytometry
  • Formulating methodological procedures and keeping various protocols up-to-date
  • Familiarizing users (mainly PhD students, Postdocs, MSc students and interns) with equipment and teaching them the different analytical methods
  • Keeping the labs operational and providing general support
  • Preparing for and participating in scientific expeditions (largely cruises)
  • Analyzing samples and data, and reporting the corresponding results in a timely and precise manner

Salary

  • The salary is compliant to the CAO-OI with a scale 8 or 9, depending on the candidates education and experience.

Job Requirements

For this challenging position as a microbiology research assistant, NIOZ is looking for enthusiastic and collegial candidates with:

  • A completed B.Voc education in microbiology (Bachelor of Vocation Studies / B.Sc in Microbiology)
  • Interest in marine sciences, international working environment and willingness to participate in scientific cruises
  • Affinity, and preferably experience, with cultivation of microbes, microscopy and flow cytometry
  • Ability to work with precision, to develop methods, use analytic software and be skilled in data processing and archiving
  • Resourcefulness and self-reliance with solving technical issues
  • Flexible attitude towards planning of task and pro-active position regarding feedback of results
  • Good communication skills in both English and Dutch (oral and written)
