Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is looking for an emerging scholar in the field of Ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change.
As an assistant/associate professor, the candidate will use an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approach in their research to examine climate change adaptation. To determine the extent to which ecosystem-based adaptation can address the present and future impacts of climate change, they combine quantitative and qualitative methods.
For instance, they will evaluate which natural systems can be used to reduce floods and how reforestation and natural ecosystems can be used to increase river flows during dry spells. They will join the Water Systems and Global Change group, which is expanding quickly. a multidisciplinary team investigating how climate change will affect the quality and quantity of water. To study the future effects of climate change and socioeconomic development, the group combines models and field research methods.
Tasks
As an Assistant/Associate Professor in Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Large Scale Water Modeling, applicants are to perform the following tasks
- create and follow-up leads with industrial customers all over the world. Translate trends, challenges, and innovations of their market into valuable research projects;
- organize professional account management for a selected number of customers;
- together with our experts, translate societal and business needs into new high-value propositions;
- build consortia of international customers to work collectively on large, game-changing, research projects. The aim is to allow partners to accelerate innovation and product development and get access to the latest technologies;
- negotiate the commercial terms of project agreements and get these signed in close collaboration with the legal and financial experts of WFBR;
- develop and maintain a relevant international business network to build and expand the brand name of WUR in general and WFBR in particular to create a market leading position in selected areas;
- develop the business models for fueling and enabling digital transformation for all actors in the supply chain, with a focus on data, models, and AI connected to logistics and (fresh) product knowledge.
Salary
The Assistant/Associate Professor in Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Large Scale Water Modeling position at Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment that include:
- a competitive gross salary from a minimum of € 3.974,- to a maximum of € 5.439, depending on experience;
- the option to accrue additional compensation hours by working more, up to 40 hours per week;
- sabbatical leave, study leave, and partially paid parental leave;
- there is a strong focus on vitality and you can make use of the sports facilities available on campus for a small fee;
- a fixed December bonus of 4%;

Job Requirements
To be eligible for this position, applicants should meet the following requirements
- A PhD degree in hydrology, environmental sciences, ecology, hydrology, climate sciences, or related field
- Experience with climate change adaptation preferably in the water sector
- Experience with ecosystem-based adaptation and nature-based solutions for global change impacts.
- An emerging publishing record in peer-reviewed international academic literature.
- Experience or affinity with inter and transdisciplinary research approaches
- Experience in or willingness to learn acquiring and lead internationally oriented research projects
- A strong team player is willing to contribute to the wider interests of the group and the university.
- Experience and affinity with delivering high-quality education at BSc and/or MSc levels, including supervising BSc and MSc students.
- Excellent English communication and writing skills (C1 level)
