Applications are welcome in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at the Delft University of Technology for a PhD in Assessment and Modelling of Noise Annoyance of Current and Future Aircraft.
This PhD project will focus on the development of novel perception-based assessment techniques and modelling of aircraft noise annoyance. The PhD researcher will benefit from the extensive in-house expertise in the field. To perform the necessary experiments, the PhD researcher will be able to use the state-of-the-art equipment present in the research group, such as microphone arrays for acoustic measurements and the newly-developed psychoacoustic listening room.
The main objectives of this PhD project (Assessment and Modelling of Noise Annoyance of Current and Future Aircraft) are to:
- Determine the main sound characteristics of aircraft noise that influence the perceived annoyance via listening experiments.
- Develop semi-empirical noise annoyance prediction models for current aircraft (turbofan and turboprop), as well as for near-future aviation concepts (unconventional aircraft configurations, drones, urban air mobility vehicles).

Job Requirements
Applicants for the PhD in Assessment and Modelling of Noise Annoyance of Current and Future Aircraft should meet the following criteria:
- MSc degree (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering, acoustics, psychoacoustics, (applied) physics, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, or a related subject.
- A combination of good mathematical and analytical skills.
- Solid fundamental knowledge of signal processing, and acoustic measurements.
- Strong programming skills (e.g. MATLAB or Python) are advantageous.
- High interest in performing experiments is essential.
- Background in the field of psychoacoustics is advantageous.
- Driven, enthusiastic, and independent thinker.
- Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals.
- The candidate should have a very good command of the English language, direct communication as well as writing skills and should enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment.
