In Kenya, the APHRC is looking for a Quantitative Data Analyst, Qualitative Data Analysts, Transcribers, Research Officer to work on their Scaling Sexual and Reproductive Health Solutions initiative.
The project’s goal is to assess how Kenya’s Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy 2015 is being implemented. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international research institute dedicated to undertaking high-quality, policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. It is headed by Africans and is based in Africa. In areas like education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing, our research addresses significant development issues and challenges facing Sub-Saharan Africa. Our mission is to provide evidence for action, engage with regional policymakers to communicate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve Africa’s quality of life.
Tasks
The APHRC tasks for this positions include:
Qualitative Analyst
- Develop a thematic codebook for generating themes and sub-themes in line with the objectives of the analysis. This will involve producing summaries, abstracts and coding.
- Develop coding notes from the Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and freelisting interviews.
- Carry out a detailed analysis of the qualitative data collected using appropriate analysis tools such as NVivo or Dedoose.
- Develop qualitative analysis report that includes a description of results in terms of themes and sub-themes, including but not limited to quotations, examining relationships and patterns between categories and themes, discussion of results, and annex for the final codebook.
- Contribute to the writing of qualitative methods sections for reports or other publications.
Transcrbers
- Transcription and translation of qualitative interviews conducted in English or Kiswahili to Kiswahili or English.
- Attend planning, review and debrief meetings with project staff.
- Write and share a report of the transcribing process.
- Clean and proofread set of transcribed interviews.
- Prepare a database entailing biographical information of the interviewees.
Quantitative Analyst
- Develop the project’s pre-analysis and analysis plans.
- Conduct data cleaning and analysis including conducting all required consistency checks.
- Conduct status analysis of the Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) outcomes.
- Perform the trends in ASRH outcomes and their drivers during the policy implementation period.
- Document and manage datasets according to the Center’s guidelines on data documentation, archiving, and sharing.
- Extract data and prepare analytical files.
- Perform exploratory and advanced statistical analysis of data.
- Develop the evaluation report that includes community mapping using GIS or data visualizations software.
- Write technical reports.
Research Officer
- Contribute to various stakeholder engagement activities such as inception meetings and policy engagement in Kenya;
- Participate in workshops, meetings, conferences and report on the proceedings;
- Support the development of study protocols, application for ethical approvals and research permits;
- Participate in scientific publications and other dissemination resources such as technical reports, donor reports, briefing papers and blogs;
- Contribute to proposal development efforts in the Center;
- Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of field staff during data collection;
- Support with quantitative data management and analysis.
Job Requirements
The APHRC positions seek candidates who meet the criteria below:
For Researchers
- Master’s degree in any of the following areas: population studies/demography, statistics, epidemiology, economics or related discipline.
- At least two years’ post-Masters’ qualification experience in a research setting.
- Proven quantitative skills, with familiarity with related analysis packages STATA, SPSS, R.
- Experience analyzing routine health facility data (DHIS2) and national health surveys (DHS, MICS, SMART, PMA, SPA).
- Experience conducting field research and managing data collection teams.
For Transcribers
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree.
- Proficient in English and Swahili, (oral and written).
- Previous experience in transcribing qualitative interviews.
- Typing speed of 60WPM and above.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines without supervision
Qualitative Analyst
- Bachelor’s degree in any Social Science or equivalent.
- Proficiency with one or more statistical analysis software packages, such as NVivo, for data management and analysis.
- At least two years’ experience in qualitative data analysis using content analysis, including the application of conceptual frameworks, codebook development, and coding.
- Experience performing rapid qualitative analysis.
- Excellent report writing skills and experience in producing high-quality reports on outcomes of qualitative analysis.
