PostDoc Position in Miniaturized Flexure Joints for Robotic Surgery (FlexMi)

The Surgical Robotics Lab and the Precision Engineering Laboratory of the University of Twente have a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the research area of flexure-based design of miniaturized tools for applications in minimally invasive surgery (FlexMi)

The FlexMi project aims to use a model-based design methodology to develop a new class of flexure-based robotic devices that work in tandem with remote magnetic actuation systems to broaden the scope of minimally invasive surgery. The focus of the project is on achieving reliable actuation response over a large range of motion through millimeter-scale flexure-based components. They target a model-based design methodology for developing small-scale flexure-based components. Magnetic actuation will be used for instantaneous and accurate mechanical load transfer without the need for cables or wires.

Tasks

The successful candidate will perform the following tasks

  • Develop a novel model-based design approach for large stroke, high load miniaturized flexures
  • Integrate existing remote actuation and sensing principles within miniaturized design
  • Demonstrate a functioning proof of concept prototype within a representative surgical workspace.

Salary

The PostDoc Position in Miniaturized Flexure Joints for Robotic Surgery (FlexMi) offers:

  • Gross salary between € 3.408,-and € 4.474,- per month depending on experience and qualifications.
  • A holiday pay and a year-end bonus.
  • And other fringe benefits.

Job Requirements

  • The successful applicant has (or will shortly) a PhD in mechanical engineering, biomechanical engineering, applied physics or in a closely related discipline.
  • He or she possesses excellent skills and practical experience in one or more of the following research areas: mechanical design, non-linear mechanical modelling, system dynamics and mechatronics.
  • Experience at the intersection of one or more of these areas is desirable.
  • Hands-on experience with designing and executing experience is preferred. Fluency in English is required.
