Postdoc Position on African Economic History at Wageningen University

A postdoctoral researcher in the field of history or economics focussing on the long-term development of African economies since 1850.

The candidate will have the liberty to set up a research project on one of the following topics:

  • Intra-African trade and trade networks
  • Labour markets, education and human capital formation
  • Government borrowing and foreign direct investment

The candidate will be part of a research team working on the NWO-funded VICI-project ‘South-South Divergence. Comparative Histories of Regional Integration in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa since 1850’, led by prof. Ewout Frankema and embedded in the Rural and Environmental History Group (RHI). Furthermore, he/she will contribute to the teaching program of the RHI group and assist in the development of the educational resources by the project team.

Start Date: March 1, 2022

Salary

The Postdoc Position on African Economic History covers:

  • A gross monthly salary of between €3.408,- and €4.474, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities;
  • sabbatical leave, study leave, and paid parental leave;
  • working hours that can be discussed and arranged so that they allow for the best possible work-life balance;
  • the option to accrue additional holiday hours by working more, up to 40 hours per week;
  • there is a strong focus on vitality and you can make use of the sports facilities available on campus for a small fee;
  • a fixed December bonus of 8.3%;
  • excellent pension scheme.

Job Requirements

The Postdoc Position on African Economic History seeks candidates with:

  • an ambitious, enthusiastic scholar and a team player, devoted to research and education in an international and interdisciplinary academic environment;
  • an excellent early-career research track-record, incl. peer-reviewed publications;
  • proven experience with archival research and the application of statistical/econometric analysis;
  • excellent command of English in oral and written form; proficiency in other languages would be considered an advantage, depending on the chosen research focus;
  • good organizational skills and the proven capacity to work with deadlines;
  • enthusiasm for teaching and working with (international) students;
  • ability to work both independently and in small teams.
