Multilingual voices in STEM Education (Multi-STEM) Postdoctoral Position in the Netherlands

The faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences seeks an enthusiastic and motivated postdoctoral Researcher for the Multi-STEM project.

The Multi-STEM project is a joint research project of Utrecht University, Hogeschool Utrecht, and Hogeschool iPabo, which aims to promote the participation of multilingual children in education: both in Science & Technology and Mathematics.

The aim of the Multi-STEM project is to understand how these multilingual strategies can promote migrant children’s STEM participation (achievement and inclusion) in and across formal, non-formal, and informal learning.

The postdoc will conduct a longitudinal study focusing on the mechanisms and processes involved in the use of home languages across formal (school), non-formal (science museum), and informal (home) contexts.

More specifically, the objectives of the MULTI_STEM postdoc project are to:

  • determine teachers’ and parents’ attitudes towards translanguaging;
  • investigate interactions between non-formal and informal learning settings and the role of translanguaging strategies therein;
  • identify the mechanisms and processes involved in migrant (and other) children’s participation across formal, non-formal, informal settings and articulate the role of translanguaging strategies therein;
  • develop a theoretical framework for pedagogical translanguaging as a form of boundary crossing.
