Harry Frank Distinguished Scholars Awards 2021

Applications are open to the Harry Frank Distinguished Scholar Awards 2021

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Awards (formerly the Harry Frank Guggenheim Research Grants) honor leading scholars who propose to make a significant contribution to illuminating a violent subject.

The Foundation welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and aligned disciplines that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and aggression. Examining the consequences of violence is beneficial insofar as it establishes a clear case that these results can serve as triggers of potential violence.

Proposals from any of the natural and social sciences, as well as related disciplines, are welcome, as long as they promise to improve comprehension of the causes, origins, and control of violence and aggression. A study that discusses immediate, current-day problems of violence—what causes it, how it works, and what avoids or reduces it—gets top priority. The foundation is interested in violence related to many subjects, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • War
  • Racial, ethnic, and religious conflict
  • Crime
  • Political extremism and nationalism
  • Terrorism
  • Family and intimate-partner relationships
  • Climate instability and natural resource competition

Benefits

The Harry Frank award falls within the range of $15,000 to $45,000 each year.

Eligibility

  • Applicants for the Harry Frank awards may be citizens of any country.
  • Although most applicants are college or university professors, affiliation with an institution of higher learning is not required.
