Facebook is pleased to invite faculty to respond to this call for research proposals pertaining to the aforementioned topics “Next-generation Data Infrastructure” in order to promote more progress in this field and deepen partnership with academia.
Businesses and companies all over the world are becoming increasingly data-driven, and goods and services are increasingly based on data intelligence. As a result, the need for reliable and effective data storage and processing on a global scale is becoming even more important.
Years of evolution in analytical and transactional data structures, as well as a constant infusion of capabilities resulting from new use cases and data processing paradigms, have resulted in modern data infrastructure architectures. Inseparably linked data warehouses are being replaced by more open ecosystems built around low-cost globally available storage and open file formats; data science and machine learning workloads are increasingly sharing the same infrastructure as analytical workloads; and transactional systems and key-value stores are experimenting with ways to maintain consistency, reliability, and performance while operating. Despite all of these initiatives and development, the data management group continues to struggle with defining characteristics of next-generation data infrastructure.
Nevertheless, the Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Converged architectures for data wrangling, machine learning, and analytics
- Advances in testing and verification for storage and processing systems
- Data management and processing at a global scale
- The physical layout and IO optimizations
- Large scale query processing
Benefits
A $50,000 range for each winner to cover:
- graduate or post-graduate students;
- employment/tuition;
- travel associated with the research (conferences, workshops, summits, etc.); and
- other research costs (e.g., equipment, laptops, incidental costs).
Eligibility
- The proposal must adhere to all existing rules, legislation, and policies in the United States and internationally.
- Applicants must be full-time faculty members at an accredited academic institution that grants Ph.D. students research degrees.
- Any subsequent award must include the applicant as the Principal Investigator.
Submission Process
- All project participants’ curriculum vitae
- A one- to two-page project overview in English that explains the project’s emphasis, techniques, any related previous work, and a timeline with objectives and expected outcomes.
- A draft budget summary (1 page) that includes an estimate of the award’s expense as well as an overview of how funds will be spent.
