Applications are currently ongoing for the TWAS Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI) 2021.

TWAS launches a new initiative with the help of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to improve the ability of African countries that fall behind in science and technology. The new initiative (Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI) is targeted at young scientists who are just starting out in their careers or are about to return to academia in their home country. Grants are awarded under this scheme to promising high-level research projects in Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Information Computer Technology, Mathematics, Medical Sciences, and Physics carried out in African countries described by TWAS as being behind in science and technology.

Eligibility

  • The Principal Investigator must be a citizen of a qualifying African country with a science and technology deficit
  • They must have obtained their Ph.D. within the last 5 years in a country other than their home country.
  • The Principal Investigator must be 40 years and below.
  • At the time of application, the applicant must not be a TWAS or OWSD Early Career Women Scientists (ECWS) Fellowship recipient.
  • Women scientists and those employed in the least Developed Countries are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • The applicant must submit a strong Research Proposal; AuthorAID provides more detail about how to write a strong proposal.
