Proposals are welcome to the 2021 Networking request for proposals: Internet and web services organized by Facebook.
Facebook is pleased to invite faculty to respond to this request for research proposals in order to promote more creativity in the internet and web services, as well as to deepen the partnership with academia. However, winners will each be awarded $50,000 at the end of the project
The subjects covered by networking research are diverse. Facebook focuses on specific topics that can support the research community and Facebook each year, and these topics can change from year to year. This year, they are looking for ideas that concentrate on the internet and web services. The following are some examples of possible topics:
- Internet transport protocols (e.g., QUIC, HTTP/3)
- Edge computing services
- Content delivery techniques (e.g., load balancing, telemetry)
- Distributed caching
Benefits
The research will fund:
- graduate or post-graduate students’ employment/tuition;
- other research costs (like equipment, laptops, incidental costs);
- travel associated with the research (conferences, workshops, summits, etc.).
Additionally,
- Award recipients will be listed on the Facebook Research website and will also be invited to a Networking & Communications Faculty Summit to discuss their findings and insights.
- PIs and Co-PIs on the winning proposals will be automatically granted access to Crowd-Tangle, a public insights tool from Facebook that makes it easy to follow, analyze, and report on what’s happening with public content on social media.
Eligibility
- Proposals must adhere to all existing rules, legislation, and policies in the United States and internationally.
- Applicants must be full-time faculty members at an accredited academic institution that grants Ph.D. students research degrees.
- Any subsequent award must include the applicant as the Principal Investigator.
- Government officials (with the exception of public university faculty and employees, to the degree that they may be deemed government officials), and political figures are not eligible to apply.
Nomination Process
- All project participants’ curriculum vitae.
- A one- to two-page project overview in English that explains the project’s emphasis, techniques, any related previous work, and a timeline with objectives and expected outcomes.
- Organization details, including tax information and administrative contact information.
- A draft budget summary (1 page) that includes an estimate of the award’s expense as well as an overview of how funds will be spent.
