The Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs (DAERA) welcomes applications for Postgraduate studentships at a university in the United Kingdom (UK) or the Republic of Ireland (ROI).
Each year, the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs (DAERA) offers a limited number of Postgraduate Studentships for three years of research leading to a PhD qualification at a university in the United Kingdom (UK) or Republic of Ireland (ROI).
The DAERA Postgraduate Studentships competition is for students who wish to undertake doctoral programmes by research. The departmental priorities and budget availability determine the number of studentships.

Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration for a DAERA Postgraduate Studentships, candidate must satisfy ALL the eligibility criteria
- The candidate must be ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland for the full three-year period before the first day of the first academic year
- The candidate must be a UK national, an Irish national, an EU national, or a relevant family member of an EU national with “protected rights” under the EU Withdrawal Agreement with settled or pre-settled status under the EUSS.
- The required academic qualification is a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from a university in the United Kingdom or Ireland, or qualifications and experience considered by the department to be equivalent to this standard.
- Candidates may apply if they are sitting their final degree examination in June 2025.
- Candidates must supply official, final results of all qualifications to be used to meet the academic requirements before the start of the studentship.
- Students must be able to demonstrate a capability to undertake and benefit from research training through to completion to the standard necessary to qualify for a PhD.
- Research proposals must address one of our research needs in 2025.
Selection Criteria
The selection process for DAERA Postgraduate Studentships applications is based on the following criteria:
- A research proposal must address one of DAERA’s research needs for 2025.
- DAERA intends to fund a minimum of three Lough Neagh nature-based solutions Studentships from the 2025 competition (Research Need 4.1),
- Meeting Action 34 of the Lough Neagh Action Plan (subject to minimum standards being achieved at interview).
Application Process
Applicants must upload the following documents:
- A unique research proposal supported by at least one university supervisor with the relevant expertise to oversee the successful completion of the work proposed in the application.
- An academic reference from the institution of the student’s primary degree regarding their academic attributes, performance on their degree course, and actual or anticipated academic qualifications;
- A reference from the Head of Department at the proposed university/center of postgraduate study, supporting the proposal and confirming
