“I am sharing this info with new graduates so they can use their language skills and not forget them” Emily Nicole Boaler. You can use language skills for all sorts of jobs, like testing games for SEGA, buying stuff for TK Maxx from other countries, fixing trucks for VOLVO overseas, or being a tour guide on cruise ships.
Be aware of and promote the transferable skills you have picked up from your degree
Writing on LinkedIn and giving talks for free helped me remember how useful the skills from my degree are. Writing skills can help with marketing, like promoting a company, and speaking skills can be handy for sales pitches. Don’t forget about these skills. Use them, improve them, and talk about them. Some of us don’t realize how valuable these skills are to employers, but we’re wrong about that.
Complete extra courses
Shortly after graduating, I took a class on SEO, Email Marketing, PPC, PPA, Google Adwords, and other marketing stuff. Because of this class, I got asked to interview for a Digital Marketing job that needed French. It showed me that taking extra classes can help you stand out. I didn’t get the job, but without that class, I wouldn’t have even gotten the interview. Taking extra classes can also be a good thing to talk about in an interview. It shows the employer that you’ve been proactive, learned things on your own, and most importantly, that you’re excited to learn new stuff, which is really important for a new job.
Research sectors upon graduation
Lots of us at university are super busy with studying that we forget to think about our future careers until we finish our final exams. Ask your professors if they know any former students who used their language skills in their jobs. Look at job ads to see what jobs need languages and think about what you’d like to do.
Endorsements and recommendations
Ask classmates, teachers, and colleagues for recommendations. These endorsements can make employers more likely to choose you over other candidates. Having your language skills endorsed is crucial. It can persuade employers to interview you because others are vouching for your abilities.
Make the most of careers services offered by your university
I used the career services a lot at Nottingham Trent. I visited the job office to find student jobs and got a job at Disneyland Paris through them. They also helped me make my CV better and get ready for interviews. I had one-on-one sessions with a career expert and went to events where people talked about their jobs, like interpreters for the EU.
